11 - 1910's - Asta NielsenIn what can only be described as a "bad couple of years for men", Asta Nielsen was the first Sex Symbol of Hollywood, starring in her first silent film "The Abyss" in 1910. Her salary in 1911 was $80,000, which adjusted for inflation, is worth about $312,000,000 today. She was such a famous movie star (and movies were so rare in the world) that she was famous in every country in the world (with electricity).
Though her films were created in Germany and she spoke no English, the "silent" nature of the films allowed her to star anywhere. Unfortunately, when talkies emerged in the late 20's, her career disappeared.
10 - 1900's - Evelyn NesbitEvelyn began her modeling career in 1901 at the age of 16, before those pesky child labor and child endangerment rules became common. She was known for her extremely long and wavy red hair, and her slender yet shapely body.
Modeling in her day consisted of posing for artists for sculptures and paintings, and she was the most successful model in the newly created field of "fashion photography model". She was a Supermodel before they existed...likely the reason she never got into heroin and anorexia.
Evelyn will best be remembered throughout history as the woman behind The Love Triangle of the Century. Seems her 1st husband was just a little on the jealous side, and when he saw the man who deflowered his young wife at the theater, he shot him 3 times in the face at point blank range. He's reported to have exclaimed after his shots "Bitch, that's for messin' my ho" (NOTE - fact check this). Her husband used the first successful temporary insanity plea in history to walk out of prison. Hot chicks can do crazy things to a man!
9 - 1920's - Clara BowClara was the ideal flapper, with short bobby hair, short skirt, and small breasts, she came to define the 1920's and everything that it represented. Keep in mind that alcohol was banned this decade. No alcohol = men find small breasted women sexy? Discuss amongst yourselves.
Clara made the movie "It", which coined the term "the it girl". Fancy. The reason it was called "It" though is because its original title "SEX" would never have made it through the sensors. Critics of the day said "this movie doesn't have 'it', it has 'those'". 'Those' meaning her breasts for those of you too slow to keep up.
Clara's career wound down quickly with the advent of talkies, as her thick Brooklyn accent put off viewers - she was the Fran Drescher of her day.
8 - 1980's - MadonnaThe most successful women artist of all time, Madonna came to define Sex Symbol in the 80's, most notably simulating sex on stage during her performance of Like a Virgin during the MTV Music awards. Here's a big tip - she wasn't a virgin at the time!
Madonna's many accomplishments are far too numerous to include here, so feel free to just gaze upon a few pictures of her instead.
7 - 1930's - Mae West
Now this woman didn't mess around with her role as a Sex Symbol. Her first play she wrote was titled "Sex", and after performing it on Broadway for a few weeks, was shut down for indecency laws. Mae served 10 days in jail, but kept it real by sleeping with the warden in exchange for a silk prison uniform (wool can be chafing during prison sex)
Obviously having learned her lesson, Mae's next play was called "The Drag" and was about homosexuality, also getting banned from Broadway. Her final play was called "The Pleasure Man" and no dice again for Broadway.
Mae packed up and headed to Hollywood, where she became the famous Sex Symbol we all remember her for. Mae is particularly famous for her quotes of "Is that a gun in your pocket, or are you just happy to see me", "when I'm good, I'm very good, but when I'm bad, I'm better", and finally "I remember our date and have the splinters to prove it".
6 - 1940's - Betty GrableThe most famous pin-up girl in history, Betty Grable's ass was stuck to the side of so many planes, she saw more war action than Eisenhower. She's personally one of the greatest war heroes of WWII. Her legs are described as the greatest legs in history, and they were insured for $2M against any damage.
Grable transformed her success as the top pin-up girl into a sparkling Hollywood career, no doubt helped by the millions of GI's who returned home, without seeing a girl in years, ready to tear little Miss Grable apart. They'd sadly have to settle for her movies.
5 - 1970's - Farrah FawcettThe poster that launched the Vaseline industry, that caused millions of teenage boys to go blind, and that created the medical condition called "Farrah Claw". Farrah's poster was on the wall of nearly every red-blooded American boy in the 70's.
Farrah continued her success with a brief stint on Charlie's Angels, and after that...well she hasn't done much after that 1 season and the poster. However, her legacy of hotness remains high.
fter refusing to pose nude in any films or pictures, she changed her mind and appeared in Playboy in 1995. It was the top selling issue of the 90's.
4 - 1990's - Pamela AndersonDiscovered in Canada at a Canadian Football League game, Pam made her Playboy debut in 1989 and then head off to Hollywood. She then made the best two career moves in Sex Symbol history - she died her hair blond and got a breast job. That led directly to her landing the job responsible for her being the Sex Symbol of the 90's - CJ Parker of Baywatch. It's rumoved that Tivo included their slow motion feature simply to watch Baywatch.
Pam's most famous movie role was as herself, in her widely seen video (in 15 minute intervals) of her having sex with Tommy Lee. The movie, which takes place on a oat in Lake Havasu (or so I've heard) is the most watched pornographic video in history.
3 - 2000's - Angelina JolieIf you had asked anyone at 2005 who this would award would have gone to, it would almost certainly have been Britney Spears. But since she's come to define "Trainwreck" more than Sex Symbol, we've chosen to give this award to Angelina Jolie for her consistently sexy decade.
Jolie apparently has won numerous awards, including an Academy Award, for acting in several movies in which she didn't play hot women. Her more famous roles are of course Lara Croft and Mrs. Smith, although all of these roles pale in comparison to her premier role as Gia (rent it if you don't know what I'm talking about!).
2 - 1950's - Marilyn MonroeOriginally born Norma Jean Baker, Marilyn is generally regarded the biggest Sex Symbol in history. Monroe burst onto the Hollywood scene in the early 50's with such films as Don't Bother to Knock and Niagara.
One Hugh Hefner, who you might have heard of, quickly bought up nude photographs of Marilyn for his first issue of a magazine he called Playboy, though I am not familiar with this title. When asked what she had on for the photo shoot, Marilyn replied "The radio".
Movies like "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes" and "How to Marry a Millionaire" cemented her status as the biggest draw in Hollywood. Sadly her life ended far too soon 1962 of a drug overdose.
Amongst the other things Marilyn is famous for is marrying Joe Dimaggio, sleeping with both Kennedys, and of course inspiring Lindsay Lohan's nude shots a few week ago.
1 - 1960's - Brigitte BardotBrigitte got her start in the late 1950's, but because she often appeared nude, or near nude, most of her movies were considered "European art movies". They're like the crappy movies you sit through today for the 15 second shot of a girl's breasts, The Gift being the best example of that.
When the 60's liberation started, and sex became something that everyone was doing with everyone (lucky bastards), Brigitte quickly rose in popularity. Her Hollywood career never really picked up as the producers thought her sexy image, big breasts and French accent made her unsuitable for films. These producers would later be grouped together as "The Biggest Idiots in History".
Bardot is credited with popularizing the bikini, and for this reason alone should be near the top of the Greatest People in History. Bardot's famous nickname will always be "The Sex Kitten", and to me will always be the inspiration for every Bond Girl ever.
